(American, 20th C. ) |
Lillian Tiffany was born in Ashford, England, of American parents. As she
was not well as a child, she was educated at home in Washington DC, where she
was raised by her paternal grandmother, and as a result developed a very close
relationship with her pet dogs. She began sketching animals early on and was
drawing finished works by the time she was a teenager. She soon came to specialize
in portraying dogs.
She studied with George B. Bridgman at the Art Students League, and later with
Raymond Neilson at the National Academy of Design, both in New York City. It
is said that in the course of her career, that she did at least one study of
all of the 109 breeds then recognized by The American Kennel Club, some of which
were used as illustrations in “The American Kennel Club Gazette.” |
